Just over 100 years ago the German Nazi party started their decent into fascism and concentration camps. An early start to that descent was withdrawing the protections of transgender people. Trans rights are probably a ‘canary in the coalmine’ – when they go, things are sliding. I see this slide in America with the recent Executive Order misunderstanding gender entirely.
New Zealand isn’t America, however we do seem to follow.
Many have wondered how Germans let the full insanity of Nazi Germany come to pass.
Many of us respect the phrase ‘Evil flourishes when good men do nothing’.
I have massive respect for the bravery of trans people and the fragility of their situations. Their personal quest hurts nobody. In wondering what I could do to be a ‘good person who did something’, I realised I have something. So I am making my Welcoming Gender Diversity module freely available here on Blair Learning. For those embarrassed and curious about their lack of knowledge on gender, it’s a great coverage (IMO).
The more New Zealanders (and others!) understand gender diversity, the stronger the resistance to killing our canaries may be.
The module takes about 20 minutes to complete. Grab a cuppa and get into it. And if you know someone who doesn’t understand gender too well, but is open to learn in an unchallenging, unembarassing private environment, consider sharing the link and do your little bit to be a ‘good man who did something’. Or a good person rather – that’s a little nod you’ll understand if you complete the module
